It's hard to believe that today 844 million people do not have clean water and 2.3 billion do not have a decent toilet - around one in three of the world's population. Every two minutes a child under five dies from diarrheal diseases caused by poor water and sanitation.

WaterAid is looking for a USAID Business Development Specialist to play a vital role in building WaterAid America's network of strategic relationships with USAID, identifying and pursuing opportunities for collaboration in our programs, and g deliverinstrong growth in our restricted funding pipeline to support WaterAid's goal of reaching everyone, everywhere with clean water, decent toilets, and good hygiene within a generation.

Working within the Strategic Partnerships Team, which annually raises $15M in support of WaterAid's global mission, the USAID Business Development Specialist will lead on developing relationships with USAID, positioning WaterAid America for opportunities and partnership development, and will work with other members of the SPT in the proposal development and management process. Specific duties & responsibilities include:

  • Lead and support WaterAid's positioning on partnership opportunities from USAID, working with Regional Teams, Country Programs, and other WaterAid Federation Members;
  • Develop, and implement a resource mobilization strategy for increasing funding from USAID;
  • Build, maintain, and track global relationships with USAID representatives (as well as working with WaterAid Country Programs to cultivate and facilitate 'in-country' relationships with country / regional level offices);
  • Ensure a strong pipeline of funding opportunities from USAID across WaterAid's country programs;
  • Provide WaterAid staff / programs with up-to-date intelligence on USAID funding opportunities, terms, and conditions, including specific information and guidance on cost recovery;

To be successful, you'll need to possess strong work ethic and sound judgement, a wide network and excellent communication skills, and meet the following qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in business or partnership development, preferably within the international development sector;
  • A strong working knowledge of US government international development policies and processes;
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrated experience negotiating with government agencies and other stakeholders;
  • Strong experience and proven track record of success in securing high value new business from USAID and donors;
  • Exceptional attention to detail; high level of proficiency in Excel and experience managing complex budgets;
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally for up to 20% time at peak periods;
  • Fully committed to WaterAid's vision, mission and values and a way of working that demonstrates this, with the ability to communicate this enthusiasm to others.

We are particularly interested in candidates possessing:

  • A graduate degree in public policy, international affairs, finance, or related relevant area;
  • Additional trainings or certifications in USAID Rules and Regulations;
  • A technical background in an area intersecting with WASH: health, education, gender, or climate change and extensive NGO and USG relationships in that sector;
  • French and/or Spanish language skills, written and spoken.

We started because no NGO like us existed. We'll end when no organisation like us is needed. In the meantime, we're making great progress - since 1981, we have reached 25 million people with clean water and, since 2004, 24 million people with sanitation.
